True, I'm thinking scp for some reason, which is a pain in the arse to copy stuff with dev directories in without taring first, I'm doing far to much ssh work lately.
Although I don't believe scp will copy the bootsector so you would need to reinstall grub/lilo

cp is also good for copying entire partitions. Many's the time I've done a

1. cp /dev/hdaX /somewhere/on/2nd/hdd/hdaX.img
2. repartition /dev/hda
3. mount hdaX.img /source -o loop
4. mount /dev/hdaY /target
5. cp -a /source/* /target

just for a laugh (or even seriously).
