alternatives to WD TV Live Media Player

Postby tpgbz4z » Fri Sep 30, 2016 5:29 pm

Hello,

I have a WD TV Live Media Player Wi-fi 1080p (Old Version) from Western Digital. Unlike my Roku 3 which is unable to connect to any computer the WD TV easily lets me connect to my computers.

I read that Western Digital will no longer sell these devices.

I would like to know if there is anything in Linux that we can use to create our own device.

The reason I like the WD TV media player is due to the fact I can connect to my CentOS computer which has Samba set up to share my movies. The WD TV connects to CentOS as a "windows server" and I can play back my videos on my television.

Is it possible to make a similar device out of a Pi or something like that?

Thank you.

I had a WDTV, now I use an Amazon Fire box with Plex installed and the Plex server on my media server. I have also used a Raspberry Pi running Rasplex as the client.
