Installing Stage 1 from Gentoo DVD.

Postby hermann » Tue Jun 21, 2005 3:50 pm

Hi there, just a quick question, has the Gentoo instalation been modified from the original in any way? The reason I ask is because I would like to install the full version with a network. I was just wondering if this is possible or do I have to use the instructions in the mag?

Nice magazine BTW.

Yes, it has, as it says in the magazine. The changes are there purely to handle the fact that all packages need to come from the DVD. If you want to do a network install, you can treat the DVD as a standard stage 1install disc and follow the Gentoo handbook.

Alternatively, you can do a network install, but add the

Code: Select all
mount --bind /mnt/cdrom /mnt/gentoo/mnt/cdrom
echo "local /mnt/cdrom/Distros/Gentoo/distfiles" >/mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/mirrors

stage for the magazine. This saves downloading packages when the version on the DVD is still the latest. no matter how fast your network connection, using the DVD as a mirror will be faster.
