Debian 9 on LXF227 DVD does not setup wifi properly

Postby harijay » Sat Aug 12, 2017 11:09 am

Hi I am trying the Debian 9 install with LXF227 .
I have an Intel Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 83) wifi card.

During initial startup "dmesg" reports that it fails to initialize the firmware.

Code: Select all
[ 1792.058107] Intel(R) Wireless WiFi driver for Linux
[ 1792.058108] Copyright(c) 2003- 2015 Intel Corporation
[ 1792.059531] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: firmware: failed to load iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode (-2)
[ 1792.059537] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode failed with error -2

However following instructions from the https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi and installed the newest firmware and got the iwlwifi driver inserted into the kernel. ( added the deb to sources.list and sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi, sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi , sudo modprobe iwlwifi)

After that when I do a

Code: Select all
user@debian:/etc/NetworkManager$ lsmod | grep iwlwifi
iwlwifi               147456  0
cfg80211              589824  1 iwlwifi

However I dont see any wireless interfaces.
Code: Select all
user@debian:/etc/NetworkManager$ sudo iwconfig
enp0s25   no wireless extensions.

lo        no wireless extensions.

I have been poking around the Wifi configuration pages on the web and cannot find how to create the wlan0 interface , which I am imagining should be done if the firmware was loaded. I dont see any errors for loading of the firmware. There is also a module iwlmvm which I tried loading and that too does not trigger creating the wireless device.

Strangely the DVD also contains the Voyager debian 9 release and that works fully on the same laptop. But I really want to try the default Debian 9.

Hoping someone can walk me through how to get the firmware loaded and have it create the wlan0 or appropriate wifi with Debian 9 from the DVD.
Thanks

Apologies...all it took was posting on this forum (after half a day of trying).
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/350691/debian-9-wifi-driver-problems-fresh-install which said not to use the "jesse" Debian repo.

My new sources.list looks like :

Code: Select all
user@debian:/var/log$ sudo more /etc/apt/sources.list.d/base.list
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch main
#deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch main

I them did the following:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get remove firmware-iwlwifi
sudo apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi
sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi
sudo modprobe iwlwifi

Now when I run lsmod, I see
Code: Select all
iwlwifi               147456  1 iwlmvm
cfg80211              589824  3 iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211

The app menu indicator shows wifi and I am able to connect to wifi after giving it my password.

Also with the Live DVD run before these updates, I was not able to have the volume mute keyboard button wok..and that too is working now.

Lesson learnt ...when in doubt update. Good to know that Debian 9 has fixed all of these issues from the DVD version.
