OK, let me rephrase the question...

what is it about the output of ls -l (or any other form of ls) that you don't find user friendly ?
Give us an example of what you would like to see.

If you're looking for a Windows Exploder clone, you shouldn't be using the command line - try using Konquerer (if you use KDE) or Nautilus (if you use Gnome) instead.
