Well Apple is responsive to market pressure especially if they can sell more stuff through the iTunes store.
This is a huge income stream for them. I think that we know that Apple are very principled about certain things - e.g. OSX on any hardware. This is a philosophical thing as Apple dont want to get into a game of supporting multiple hardware devices and their drivers.
On the iPod/iTouch/iPhone sync issue I believe that the current round of Ubuntu 10.04, Mandriva 2010, PCLinuxOS 2010 are all menat to have sync for these divices in the release.
I havent tested as yet.
