I had a problem with my optical drives about eighteen months ago. I opened Nero Express 6 in Windows XP to burn an iso to a CD and discovered that the writing speed selection box was greyed out. When I looked in Device Manager I saw that both my DVD-ROM and CD-Writer drives were sporting yellow exclamation marks. The problem I think had actually been caused by Nero itself. Anyway, deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters entries in the Registry fixed it.
And then a couple of months later my whole system seemed to have slowed down quite considerably. I eventually discovered it was being caused by Nero Scout, which apparently is a system hog, so I simply disabled it and everything was OK again.
My main gripe about applications such as Nero is that, although their main program is often quite good, they will insist on installing all manner of crap you don't want along with it. Half the time you don't even know it is there until a problem occurs.
Needless to say, K3b is my first port of call for iso burning these days.
