But a proxy server that transforms content to fit the exact system specifications of the requesting device? That is new, and I think it’s a great idea.

This is something Opera offer, called Opera-mini. Dunno how long they've been doing it - ie who came up with it first, but they say: "... a remote server pre-processes the web pages before sending them to the phone ... "

OK I admit its not software based or related, but this has to be one of the most obvious Patents every
