Why oh why oh $&^(*%!£ why?

Bought one of those Soundblaster USB sound I/O sticks for my
Raspberry Pi.

In Linux and RP it works out of the box. Cool.

The Macbook Pro does not even acknowlegde that it exists at all.

In Windows it needs reams of installation junk but on the same
machine(s) but CygWin on those machines immediately allocates
/dev/dsp2 and others.

Chalk one up for Linux and its derivatives...

Well obviously it needs drivers, or a kext (or whatever OSX calls them). If the manufacturer does not provide a driver for OSX, you might be able to hunt one down on-line, given that the kernel module(s) clearly exists for Linux.
Remember, OSX isn't Linux, just because it's a bit Unixy, it doesn't have an open kernel that all and sundry can write for.
