After looking at some old motorcycle images on Google I found a shortcut icon on the bottom bar that must have been installed automatically:-

How do I get rid of it?

The old method of double clicking on the bar to bring up a menu does not seem to work with Ubuntu 12.04 classic.

I think it is referred to more correctly as a "launcher".

Cracked it.
It came back from one of those dark corners that we octogenarians develop!

I am glad about that, because I often find myself in the position of not being absolutely sure of what I am going on about.
