Please tell Linus Gnome 2 is still around

Postby tpgbz4z » Sun Oct 23, 2011 2:23 pm

Sorry if I'm late on this and you've already talked about it.

I'm surprised to read (LXF150 November 2011 page 12 Newsbytes) that Linus Torvalds ditched Gnome 3 for Xfce then complained that Xfce is still a step down from Gnome 2.

I use Gnome 2.30.2 on Debian 6. Would someone please tell him it's still available?

Thank you.

For how long? Is there a community of developers willing to spend time on it? Interestingly, KDE3 is still being maintained even though I don't think there is a distro that ships with it - so that may be an option for Gnome 2.

There's something called the "MATE" project (can't find a proper site for it at the mo) which aims to continue the Gnome 2.x codebase.

It's in Mint 12 but still a bit rough round the edges. Mint recommend default is a gnome-2-ified gnome 3 layer whose name/acronym I can't remember: gsoh or something ;)
