Printer driver problem [SOLVED]

Postby DavePritchard » Sat Sep 02, 2017 8:42 pm

Hi,
Using Pc-LinuxOS 64 bit, following a recent change to KDE5(plasma) fully updated, my printer no longer works and seems to need a driver. I have 2 Epson RPMs which I tried to install, but they both fail.
[CODE]
[dave@localhost Downloads]$ rpm -i epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.1-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm
warning: epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.1-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm: Header V4 DSA/SHA1 Signature, key ID 8aa65d56: NOKEY
error: Failed dependencies:
lsb >= 3.2 is needed by epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.1-1lsb3.2.x86_64
[dave@localhost Downloads]$ rpm -i epson-printer-utility-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
lsb >= 3.2 is needed by epson-printer-utility-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.x86_64
[dave@localhost Downloads]$
[END]
The printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R265. The Epson site no longer lists this. I have tried searching with Synaptic for lsb >= 3.2 in every combination with/without >, =, space Etc,
without success. What is lsb >= 3.2, can I download it from somewhere, or how do I cure this problem ???
Any help most welcome. Dave P..

lsb is just Linux standard base so a check on the PC-Linux forums seems in order as I seen an announcement that Ubuntu no supports lsb.

Enjoy the Choice :)

What is lsb >= 3.2

As said, lsb refers to Linux Standards Base and the rest indicates a version, in this case version 3.2 or higher. You should be able to locate (and install) it through the package manager.

Thanks for the replies.
Synaptic shows "lsb-release" version 2.0-6pclos2011 as installed,
and the following as Not installed, all version 4.1-3pclos2014
"lsb-core-lib64"
"lsb-core-noarch"
"lsb-lib64"
"lsb-noarch"
"lsb-test"
Am I correct in thinking that lsb >= 3.2 indicates any later version is Ok,
but it still leaves the question which of the uninstalled files needs to be installed, if the installed file is not what is required.

Hi Dave,

The Epson drivers and the lsb packages are a perennial issue on these forums. Unfortunately so is giving unsatisfactory answers, and I feel (being without such a printer to test this solution) that I may be about to do such. However, this topic

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=142787.0

suggests lsb-lib64 is going to be the kicker. Good luck :)

I downloaded lsb-lib64, this installed all the lsb files, however the printer still does not work
[CODE]
warning: epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.1-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm: Header V4 DSA/SHA1 Signature, key ID 8aa65d56: NOKEY
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]

2:epson-inkjet-printer-es########################################### [100%]
Stopping CUPS printing system: [ OK ]
Starting CUPS printing system: [ OK ]
Re-enabling disabled print queues:
[END]

If I try to print a file all I get is (Print to file(PDF)" no print queue is generated.
From "configure your Printer -- Help -- Troubleshoot -- The printer is not listed, locally connected printer -is selected,
after a pause it returns with three selections.
[CODE]
Not listed
EPSON Stylus Photo R265 EPSON Stylus Photo R265 usb://EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20R265
Epson Inkjet Printer #1 Epson Backend ecblp:/var/run/ecblp0
[END]
Selecting EPSON Stylus Photo R265 I then get "There is no obvious solution to this problem"
The diagnostic output =
[CODE]
Page 1 (Scheduler not running?):
{'cups_connection_failure': False}
Page 2 (Choose printer):
{'cups_dests_available': [], 'cups_queue_listed': False}
Page 3 (Local or remote?):
{'printer_is_remote': False}
Page 4 (Choose device):
{'cups_device_attributes': {'device-class': u'direct',
'device-id': u'MFG:EPSON;CMD:ESCPL2,BDC,D4,D4PX,ESCPR1;MDL:Stylus Photo R265;CLS:PRINTER;DES:EPSON Stylus Photo R265;',
'device-info': u'EPSON Stylus Photo R265',
'device-location': u'',
'device-make-and-model': u'EPSON Stylus Photo R265'},
'cups_device_listed': True,
'cups_device_uri': 'usb://EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20R265'}
Page 5 (Locale issues):
{'printer_page_size': None,
'system_locale_lang': 'en_US',
'user_locale_ctype': 'en_US',
'user_locale_messages': 'en_US'}
[END]
So the printer was found, but I am none the wiser and the printer does not print.

I tried using http://localhost:631/. with firefox, and selecting Adding Printers and Classes, then Add Printer.
the required password for root is not valid but my password is Ok. however all I get is :-
Add Printer Error Unable to add Printer Forbidden.

I have now posted this on the PC-Linux forum in the hope that others may see it.
Dave P..
So going no where there.

Confusion over "name" with root password, I had recorded dave
however the name required is "root"
Gained access to CUPS as root, and printer set up all Ok.
So Solved.

Ye olde SUDO confusion :? Don't you love Linux's permissions system great to have but it can be convoluted at times.Glad you figured it out.I have had no issues with my HP laser printer using it's drivers but it uses a 'Buntu PPA now just have to get a new black toner cartridge :D thankfully there's a Staples Office Suppy store just next door to where I live.
