Mint upgrade

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Tue Jan 31, 2017 6:04 pm

Now that has offered me the option I just need reassurance.

I seem to remember Neil writing some while ago that modern distro upgrades would not touch the /home area and its contents.

I would natch copy all to USB - just in case, should I expect the upgrade to leave my /home and content intact?

Best

Ubuntu's installer has an option to preserve your files, even if /home is on /.

But there's also the dist-upgrade option in the package manager. Mint always recommended upgrading this way rather than reinstalling.

The Mint updater should not wipe your /home partition.
However it's is reccomended to still backup your data, I'd do a simple backup of everything, then use the Mint backup and restore options to do a belt and braces backup.
There's plenty of info on the Mint website as well.
Personally I keep two partitions for the os, one for the current version, then when a new one comes out I install it on the other partition, take time to run it up and test it whilst keeping the previous version to revert to in case of problems. This paid off yesterday when I found that Abiword wasn't usable on Mint 18.1.
I also do regular clones of the os partitions.

Good luck. D.
