WiFi problem, but Web Ok

Postby DavePritchard » Wed Jan 11, 2017 3:05 pm

Hi, ( Added 13-Jan, I am away until 27-Jan, No replies possible until then ).
I have 2 computers, that are switched ( one or the other ) Ethernet connected to a Netgear DG832G Router,
These are my main systems, ( one is for emergencies only ).
two other systems are also connected one by ethernet the other via WiFi.
OS's are PC-Linux 64 bit except the WiFi one which is 32 bit.
All systems can access the Web, no problem there.
Using Dolphin, I can access/transfer files to/from the ethernet connected system,
* BUT the system using WiFi does not show up in Dolphin.

i don't know where to start with this, The WiFi box, The Main System, or the Router.
as a start I have copied the following from the WiFi box. I don't understand any of it, the commands
were taken from other posts,
Any suggestions most welcome, Dave P..

The laptop doesn't get an IP address from the router. How it still manages to get online, I don't know, but based on the output you posted, the WiFi has no IP address allocated to it. You made an error for the modprobe.conf entry, it should read:
Code: Select all
cat modprobe.conf
This will show the contents of the file modprobe.conf.

The iwconfig output shows it has found the access point but is not associated with it. Check the password is correct.

Thanks for the replies,
I tried cat modprobe.conf and get "No such file or directory"
same result on the main system.

The WiFi is currently not encrypted.

The system is an IBM lenovo desktop (pentium) when booted Firefox can access the Web,
no password needs to be entered, it just works.

Not sure if it had a password, or where to find out if one is set up
I also looked in Control Centre under hardware, there is no entry for Wireless Card (strange).

When the WiFi card was installed Web access just worked, an attempt was made to encrypt the WiFi
but Web access failed, so it was left un-encrypted,
