To Ghost or not to Ghost

Postby tedius » Mon Jul 18, 2005 3:04 pm

Just a guestion really.

What is the difference if I tar a drive with
Code: Select all
tar cvjf /mnt/hda1/hda2.tar.bz2 *

and using partimage to take an image of the partion?

Is partimage better and if so why?

tar will archive a directory and all below it including data on other filesystems (unless you use -l), partimage will archive the filesystem. Partimage should also be faster as it works at block level. The main disadvantage of partimage (IMO) is that you cannot extract individual files from the backup, it has to be extracted to a partition.

Why not? It's worked well for me and never given a problem. As with any backup program, you should do a test restore, but I've never seen either that or a real restore fail.
