Despite Bill Gates protestations to the contrary, there are many who think that Vista owes much to both the current crop of Linux and Apple Os's.
Bill Gates seems to love to play loose and free with the truth...and just like a newspeak version of 'truth'.. he seems to think that the more he repeats his outrageous claims, the more people will accept them as gospel.
For example amongst the erroneous claims he made during an interview with Meredith Vieira of NBC. he stated...re Vista.....
that no other....
"....operating system has (n)ever had parental control features before..."
Really ?
Obviously never tried or heard of parental controls in Linux or Mac.
He seems oblivious to the fact they have been available for these Os's for years..
Linux....has downloadbales such as Ipstables, dansguardian and squid.
http://desktops.linux.com/desktops/04/07/01/1833212.shtml?tid=49&tid=99&tid=13
Gates also said of Vista...
"Vista's the most advanced operating system for security ever done."
Can't wait for someone to drive a proverbial Mac ( or Linux ) truck through this bulldust..
http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/12463/
So I ask......
Is Vista at heart, a copy~cat (me too!!!) Os..?
After all I am pretty sure that Vista has borrowed (ermm pinched) large chunks of stuff from Linux and OS X.
Tell me if I am wrong... |

| All systems copy each other. Vista has innovations, it's just that none of them are of any use to the customer. (The protected media path has been hacked already anyway). |

From what I've read of Vista, many of the features are rehashes of features that have been out there on other platforms for some time, but give it a year and MS will be claiming that they invented it all, and a lot of punters will belive it, just like MS invented the Windows style GUI, the mouse, brought the home PC to the masses..... _________________ I have been touched by his noodly appendage. |

As you know I'm not an impolite person, however on the BBC interview he gave, he was talking rubbish.
To suggest Vista is the most secure operating system is well wide of the mark.
His answer to the question regarding pricing in the UK was evasive and at times misleading. When the exchange rates are what they are currently goods priced in USD$ happen to be cheaper not MORE expensive.
As for features well most of which are available third party for those on XP.
If you do paper magazines, May I recommend to you February 1-7 Micro Mart whose front cover headline is "Is this 2007's most pointless upgrade?". Windows Vista: The Micro Mart verdict inside.
It's a well written seven page damning expose' of what Vista strengths (it has one! - better voice control) and weaknesses. The conclusion is to wait on till next year before considering it and that it offers little which couldn't be gotten for less in Vista.

That's an interesting point Candy " what Vista strengths (it has one! - better voice control) " appears to be news for the cracks out there. First read this on the beeb's earlier today. http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news?id=27449
Also while looking at Vista reports on the beeb's site, There's a reporters log. Said reporter is a Mac user who appears to think at that Alt + F or whatever is a new feature in Vista / Office07 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6312501.stm _________________

I think the old adage "Any publicity is good publicity" won't work for MS, but only time will tell. The more bad press they get at the moment the better. _________________

I think you'll find he had his fingers crossed when he said that.
Oh, and in reply to the question in the topic title: broadly speaking, yes. _________________ Bye, Rhakios

Why not? It suited Custard the cat well enough.

I've long since come to the conclusion that gates lives in his own world where there is no Linux or Mac. Basically when he mentions an Operating System what he means is the only operating system that he will acknowledge to himself exists....Windows.
So if he says its the most secure operating system ever... he means most secure windows os.
Interesting poin though, if you can categorically prove that Linux or Mac is more secure than Vista could you sue him for false advertising? You would have to buy Vista to run the tests so you would be able to claim back at least the license fee as damages
Hmmmm bit of fine tuning and we have a get rich quick scheme. _________________ Need a New Signature |

No, he just missed a word out.
It should have said " the most secure WINDOWS operating system yet released". _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!
