Xandros anybody?

Postby kevanf1 » Tue May 10, 2005 1:30 pm

Is there any chance of getting Xandros on the DVD/CD's? It seems that every magazine has Fedora, Ubuntu or SuSE but not Xandros. I was a beta tester for it before it was released and I really liked it.

Probably because Fedora, Ubuntu and SUSE are GPLed. Xandros is not.

I thought that there was a version that was part of the GPL? Surely there must be to comply with the terms?

There is the "Open Desktop" edition, but the licence specifically prohibits copying or redistribution. There's nothing in the GPL to stop someone bundling GPLed software with proprietary, so the whole collection cannot be freely distributed. SUSE used to do this before they were acquired by Novell and Red Hat stopped us including their distro on the cover discs from about RH8.

Start download>go to bed>wake up and it's nearly all done. Unless you get as little sleep as I do.

Knoppix is quite friendly, ask fingers :)

Oh, and by the way 1sf (troll), you ought to know that you will get as many recommendations for Linux distributions as there are Linux users you ask. Find one you can manage, then stick with it a bit. Just installing one version after another, you will get nowhere and learn very little.
