I have discovered the wonders of knoppix whilst waiting for my new PC to arrive nd not being able to bear the other OS any longer. My HD from my linux PC is on /dev/hdb and all my data is there  I wanted to copy a few files across from /mnt/hdb7 to /mnt/hda5 but I get the "read only" message. I have done su and checked the /etc/fstab and listed the permissions - it all looks fine.
I have never worked with knoppix before, just booted it up as a novelty. Now that it is a truly useful tool I need to know how to use it. I am sure that I am missing the obvious. |

A: The general philosophy of KNOPPIX is to allow as little write access
as possible. For this reason, existing partitions are either not mounted
or only mounted "read only". If you click with your right mouse button on
an icon, the "read-only" attribute under item "device" can be un-checked.
After this, the partition can be mounted "read-write" (for already
mounted partitions, first click on "unmount"!). CAUTION: writing to NTFS
partitions can lead to data loss, since Linux does not really support this
file system! However, DOS and FAT32 file systems are safe for write access.
Tip:
In the shell the command "mount -o remount,rw /mnt/<partitionname>" can
allow already-mounted file systems to be "made writeable".

Knoppix does rock! I used it to fix my home computer that wouldn't boot this weekend. I used Knoppix 3.3 which came on one of the LXF CD's! Whew! Thank God I got the CD issue that time! You also have to do that same trick with USB memory sticks, and you have to do it each time you boot up.
Also don't forget to unmount the system first before you try and switch the permissions.
