Hi folks
I have been very happy with Suse Linux, which I renistalled as 10.1, rather than upgrade following the various performance issues if upgrading from SUSE 10. However I do like to watch DVDs on my laptop (A Compaq Presario R3600) but I can't watch them in linux "from the box". I attempted to install the relevant codecs via YaST but to no avail - an error message re resolving dependancy issues was one problem.
Can anyone direct me to a trusted DVD codec installer source or indeed player front end. Oh, I'm running KDE rather than Gnome.
Why can't Linux play DVDs from the box anyway? |

Put simply: DRM, patent issues and the law. Most if not all distros will not play DVDs ootb, and adding multimedia codecs and other proprietary stuff after installation is a regular ritual in Linux.
You'll find The Jem Report invaluable here - he gives you much more than just DVD playback.
Edit: He tells you to do an update via Zenworks somewhere in there to replace the Xine libraries with those from the Packman repository. If you haven't done so already, you would be well advised to completely update your system via Yast (NOT Zen) before you start with these instructions. There's a serious bug in the initially-installed version of Zen. |
