Please advise whether there can be virus and rootkits in Ubuntu and if they are, how to remove them.

There aren't any, so no need to remove them.

That's not strictly 100% accurate. There is the facebook rootkit ''malware'' that is still out there. It's a malware that attacks facebook, whatever OS you are running. Been in the wild over a year know. I know; I wrote it......... 8p ;) 8)
