Not-so-Flash Linux

Postby ladi » Tue Nov 08, 2005 1:42 pm

Hi All,

I tried playing an on-line game with my seven-year-old daughter and got thoroughly thrashed. Now that is really embarassing. Especially as I am running Slackware 10.1 on superior hardware, and she was running Win98 on my old machine! :x

Does anyone know why flash (and perhaps java) apps run sooooo much slower on my machine? Actually I'm pretty certain it's not a problem with my machine, as it boots up pretty quick and does just about everything else quite well.

My system spec is roughly as follows:-

Athlon XP 2800+
1 Gig Ram
256MB Radeon 9550
40 Gig 7200 RPM drive

I've found the Flash plugin to be a bit slower/buggier on Linux too. Understandably, they're going to spend more time optimising it for Windows than other platforms...

I have played many flash games, and I have actuly not encountered any serius problems.
My specs is:
P4m 2GHz (Laptop)
512MB Ram
GeForce 2 Go 32MB (this seams to be the biggest diffrence, ATI is known to have problem on Linux)

I run Gentoo
Flash version: 7.0.25
sun-jre-bin: 1.4.2.08

With Firefox 1.0.7

Clould you provide a link to the Flash/Java game, so I can test if it runs slow for me aswell?

Surely the question here is whether you still lose if you swap machines :D

Thanks for the encouragement!
You have clearly never had to endure being teased by your daughter. I will have you know that it hurts!

It's a childrens' game called Zed on www.miniclip.com. You play for points over 10 levels.. The contest was not a head-to-head as such, but about who would get more points. I managed to get to level 2. The character whizzes along on my daughter's PC, but only manages a space-walk in slow motion on mine. :-(

Well ive just tried the game and it seems to run OK on my machine, Iguess it depends on your definition of whizzes along though. Best bet is to check for flash updates, I used to have problems with flash in firefox, then I installed moz-plugger and it started to work really well, quite why moz-plugger had an effect I doont know as I thought it just linked mplayer to mozilla but hey[/quote]

Tell you guys what. Let's do this linuxgirlie style.

Who's up for trying out the game and seeing who gets the most points?
I'm currently on level 2 with something like 27000 points :-( , but I will be having another go. Lejon currently has 42840. (My daughter has about that!)

Even if you think the game is a bit kiddish, please humour me. My daughter thinks she can beat you lot anyway! :-D. You might even find some other games you like on the site.

Please post your distro and machine spec, particularly your graphics card, so I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. JDTATE is barred from this due to jealously-inspiring specs! :-D

Level 2, 17020 points... I never was any good at this sort of thing :(
AMD Athlon 1.0GHz, 512Mb memory, GeForce MX4400 graphics card with nVidia drivers, SuSE 9.2, Firefox 1.0.7
Yes, the game did seem to go into slow motion every now and then, but I think that actually helped my score :!:

28940 points Level 3, game went a little slow on level 3 but all the other levels were fine, don't think it affected my playing ability though, I still suck at these games.
