Using an old laptop...

Postby heiowge » Mon Apr 29, 2013 8:57 pm

My kids keep messing about when they're supposed to be in bed. I want to catch them out.

I want to hook up a webcam to an old laptop and stream to / record with another computer on the network.

Source PC - Asus eeepc 700. 2GB SSD, 500ish mhz processor, 512 MB RAM.

Destination PC - My desktop with specs in my signature.

I thought the laptop could use Ubuntu Server or similar as a starting point since there's not the space for a full Ubuntu / Mint install. It's currently got that with XFCE and Chromium installed.

Any ideas?
i5 4440 3.1Ghz, Asus H87M-E motherboard, 8GB DDR3, 2GB DDR5 nVidia card, 2x500GB Seagate hd, Coolermaster 750W PSU running Mint 16 MATE and Win7

eeepc 1015PX, 1.66 Ghz Intel atom processor, 2 GB DDR3, 320 GB hd, Mint 14 MATE. Fan needs fixing.

mjpg-streamer does exactly what you want, although it's also possible with ffmpeg, vlc, motion and probably mplayer.

Motion has the advantage of motion detection, so it only records when they are messing about, and can alert you too, but it may be a bit demanding for an EeePC.
