My OS is Ubuntu 12.04. My copy of Lyx is downloaded with the package manager Software Centre. The version is 2.0.2.
The problem is that the spell checker is "greyed out". On the Ubuntu forum I discovered that other users have the same problem. We have no spell checker. Earlier versions of Ubuntu did not have this problem.
The Lyx web forum does not offer a solution either.
Currently the only way I can use it is by loading Ubuntu 10.10 onto my laptop and downloading Lyx from that repository.
MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO RESPONDED TO MY QUESTION.
I ALREADY HAD ENCHANT LOADED. I FOLLOWED johnhudson's
INSTRUCTIONS AND I NOW HAVE A WORKING SPELL CHECKER!

| Debian based packages contain a list of required, recommended and clashing packages. Required packages are installed as dependencies of this package, but recommended packages are not. Find out what packages the Lyx package recommends and install those. There's a reasonable chance the spellchecking function then becomes available. |

You need to install enchant. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

LyX now uses hunspell as the default - that is, the same dictionaries as LibreOffice uses.
You can change it to enchant in Tools>Preferences>Language settings>Spellchecker.
This is the one area which the default LyX installation leaves up to you to sort out. |

Didn't lyX switch to enchant for spell checking from 2.0? Enchant is a spellchecker frontend/wrapper that works with various spellcheckers, including hunspell, aspell and ispell. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

| No; Lyx 2 switched to hunspell as the default; enchant is now the only alternative supported. |
