PPC MAC G5

Postby Fraser amster » Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:08 pm

So I last week I got a ppc mac g5 for free. It would not tur on so I fixed it and now it will. This was acheived with a new power suply unit.

Now it is running an old version of mac osx. I want to put Ubuntu on it but Im cant seem to get anywhere with booting from the cd in the last issue of Linux Format, or any version that I have found for ppc macs.

I wondered if anyone has a solution

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads seems to have a comprehensive list of PPC downloads

I have tried many of the ppc downloads, but I think it is a problem that this mac wont boot from a cd,

has anybody else had these issues with old ppc's

I hold down c at start up but I dont see the linux disk.

I've successfully installed Ubuntu on an iMac, one of the pretty blue CRT jobbies, and on an old clamshell laptop; never had access to one of the newer Macs :(

this is a g5 powermac,
I have tried many ways but it wont see the disk to boot from, it ignores it.

I also tried to select it in disk start up in system preferences but no luck.

I thought it must be possible, but I will keep trying otherwise I have a outdated mac computer.

Hmm, I assume this is a USB keyboard and not a wireless or bluetooth one, neither of which would work.
It should be possible to hold down the option (or alt) key while booting to get the startup manager and select the CD from there. Unfortunately I no longer have a PPC Mac to test this on.
