PostPosted: Fri May 11, 2012 1:00 pm    Post subject: KDE applications not closing properly Reply with quote

Since installing KDE on Mint 12, I've noticed that sometimes Firefox or Dolphin doesn't close properly.

If they are the last window open and I close them, the bar at the bottom in the panel doesn't always disappear. It stays there. If I open another app, it goes. I've noticed this often with Firefox and Dolphin, but also occasionally with VLC.

Any ideas?

I think that the application is closing OK. All that's happening is that its closure doesn't always get recognised by the panel. I see the same effect sometimes, but it's really only a tiny niggle.

If you check the output from ps,
Code:
ps | grep konqueror

I see the same sometimes, it's just the panel not refreshing AFAICT.

That means no instances of Konqueror are running, it would have output a line for each running copy (try it when Konqueror is actually running to see, then try again after quitting it).

Substitute konqueror with dolphin / firefox

Strange. I ran dolphin and did it, and got nothing back. Confused

****edit**** ...and yes, I did swap out for Konqueror in the code.

My mistake, that should be "ps ax | grep blah", otherwise ps only considers programs launched from the current shell. Or you can use

Code:
pgrep -fl progname

4800 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep --colour=auto dolphin

Which shows that dolphin is running. What do you get when you run it after quitting dolphin but while it is still shown in the panel?

grrr... I'm trying to do that now, but find having terminal open or opening terminal closes the offending window so I can't view the fault in action! Rolling Eyes

I think it's just a redrawing issue, so when you open a new program the panel redraws itself correctly.

I agree, but if you're really intent on showing that the program is not running when shown in the panel, run

Code:
sleep 20; pgrep -fl dolphin

in the terminal, then close the dolphin window before the sleep completes.
