Is it just my hardware, or does it take hours to put xubuntu on an sd card?

Installing / to 8GB SD card, /home to 2GB SSD. eeepc 700 series (500ish mhz processor (underclocked 800mhz really), 512 MB RAM.) Installing from external DVD drive, with ethernet connection for updates.

Problem solved!

Reverse it all. Set 2G SSD as / and 8GB SD card as /home and install Ubuntu Server, followed by xorg, xfce and chromium. Working PC that's faster and with more space than the crappy Xandros it shipped with.
