I would like some advice please on the following PC running XP

Packard Bell 2.9GHz
Name IMEDIA 1328
Model Type UTOW-SAM
MSIOHQL No: SAN1058593
S/No: 049652020726
PID 0496520207P/No: PB34225201

Has 2 hard drives fitted (not sure of the Size, 1 for Programmes 1 Data) and 256MB Ram.

I will be installing a new OS and at least 1GB ram possibly 2 GB.

This PC belongs to a neighbour and she would like to be able to use Spotify, do proof reading and read emails.

At first I was thinking of installing Windows 7 but because it's “Windows “and the cost, I am now looking at Mint12 or Ubuntu 11.10

Q1/ Could you recommend Mint 12 or Ubuntu 11.10 and could I use 64bit install or should I 32 bit ? I am using Ubuntu 11.10 but Mint 12 sounds very good.

First question you need to ask is whether you actually have a 64-bit processor; the spec you give is not clear. If the CPU is only 32-bit you're constrained anyway, but for the most part your user probably won't notice the difference between the two anyway - and there isn't that much dedicated 64-bit software anyway. I have a number of machines running different systems; most have 64-bit processors but all my Linux is 32-bit, and I can't tell the difference.

Regarding which flavour of Linux you use, that's largely a matter of choice; I have machines with both. I like Unity on Ubuntu, although I feel the latest improvements have actually made it less easy and intuitive to use. The downside is the colour schemes; drab and dreary is being kind.
Mint12 on the other hand uses Gnome3, which runs in a more traditional fashion using familiar menus rather than the Launcher of Unity. Even better is the Cinnamon interface, but even so it is a much brighter and more cheerful interface. If you can, try both; they both have Live CDs (or DVDs) so you can try them out without actually installing.

The processor is a Celetron Pentium.

The PC has 2 HD C/ 22.23GB D/ 36.48GB

HD C/ sounds a little noisey.

I have not heard of "Cinnamon interface" where can this be obtain from.

I have both Mint12 and Ubuntu11.10 DVD's so I can try them.

Q 1/ As the neighbour wishes to use Spotify can it RUN on ALL

the OS?

I lost track of Intel's chip naming convention ages ago, but IIRC Pentiums of any flavour are 32-bit anyway.

Both hard drives look a little small in today's terms, but you should be able to fit a Linux installation on one of them. With so little space, you may be better off with Xunbuntu which uses the lightweight Xfce desktop, or possibly Mint LXDE, the DE of which is barely more than a window manager. Some of the modern environments need way better graphics performance than your system will have. Still, anything you install will, with any luck, either have a very basic modes or will tell you in no uncertain terms if your hardware isn't up to running it.

Cinnamon is available direct from the Mint repositories, so if you install that, Synaptic will need no additions to find it. Take a look at http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com to get an idea of what it looks like, and to find the PPA addresses to add for other distros.

I've never used Spotify, but as far as I understand all the hard work is done at their end; the problem you may have is that photos may take a long time to upload and download if your machine isn't particularly fast.

Try it and see what happens.

Spotify free will only run on windows.Only the paid for version has a Linux client.

I have as stated above installed Ubuntu 11.10 from .ISO CD
All is working OK accept I can not find Terminal on this new installation even pressing Ctrl+T

Below are the instructions I have for installing Premiun addition of Spotify.

Sorry I did understand all that was seeing, I am do this for neighbour a few doors away from me. I recommend Ubuntu 11.10 to her and she is please with it but would like to have Spotify if possible.
