Yep, Statutory Off Road Notice.... :/
I've been "restoring" an MGB GT for 22 years. It has been off the road
for this period and now I have been told I have to notify the DVLC using
the SORN form, YEARLY I might add, or the might of the new laws will
be thrust upon me.
What is the matter with government departments past and present that
they can't just use plain common sense, especially as the vehicle reg'
number is still mine?
/Me shakes my head in despair... :( _________________ 73...

AFAIK the SORN was introduced ~ 10 years ago, so I reckon if they haven't got you for it before now then the've probably lost your address so you'll probable continue to get away with it. _________________ I have been touched by his noodly appendage. |

It's to try and stamp out the use of un-insured / un-taxed cars on the road. _________________

SORN means that the vehicle is off the road and uninsured, registering once a year isn't as much as the price of the alternative: having the thing confiscated and crushed _________________ still looking for that door into summer |

Hi towy71...
I think you missed the point.
My car has been off of the road for 22 years, no tax, no insurance.
Now it is an offence NOT to register it.
This bunch of plonkers in power already have the details of my
vehicle but now with the change in the law this year I have to
register an already known vehicle at the DVLC that has not been
on any road let alone have an engine under the bonnet.
Where has common sense gone?
Oh I forgot, they're politicians they have no sense... _________________ 73...

I don't see the problem. All you're doing is letting them know that the vehicle still exists but is not on the road. If it stops people cluttering up the side streets with uninsured, unroadworthy heaps then so be it.
Put it another way, you have a vehicle that has no tax, insurance or MOT, but is still there, and all you have to do it let them know that it is not on the road. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

Like I said above this has been the case for ~10 years, so it's nothing to do with this bunch of plonkers, it was the last bunch of plonkers.... _________________ I have been touched by his noodly appendage. |

If you car pre-dates 1 Jan 1973 then it is a "historic vehicle" and exempt from tax, but according to http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065254.pdf it will still need a SORN when off-road.
You'd be amazed at the number of untaxed, uninsured and/or untested (no MOT) vehicles that are driving around - and recently the numbers have been increasing. If the authorities can have an up-to-date tick box against yours, it's one less for them to worry about and they can put that bit more effort into chasing down the bad guys. It's all in a good cause. _________________ Cheers,

Hi all...
The law changed this year, and YES, this bunch of plonkers, have
removed the clause whereby if your car was off the road on or before
1998? you didn't have to do a SORN as it was considered so by the
authorities.
This bloody lot have made it illegal to have an untaxed/uninsured car
even in your garage and you HAVE to do a SORN now.
Why not save money and assume that mine and my mates Porsche 911,
that has been off of the road for 15+ years, to be already SORN like it was?
I've no problem with the form, just the way this bunch of no-hopers are going about it.
Once again, WHERE HAS COMMON SENSE GONE?
Anyhow the form goes off tomorrow for a SHELL that has not seen
tarmac in 22 years... _________________ 73...

Couldn't agree more. The particular street where I live seems to be treated by certain residents as a graveyard for broken down vehicles. There are one or two people round here who buy a second hand car, which has already seen far better days, and when it finally conks out do they get rid of it? No, they simply leave it dumped where it is and go off and come back with yet another pile of junk.
Had an amusing episode not long back when an ANPR van turned up and immediately spotted a particular untaxed car which had been left abandoned for so long that grass and weeds were growing up around the wheels. The guys had just clamped it and were making notes when out trotted the owner, beaming smile, all set to go off shopping or whatever in her current, still just about working, wreck. You should have seen the dramatic change in demeanour when she realised what was going on. I don't think her crest had ever been so fallen. Not one to derive pleasure from the misfortunes of others, I couldn’t help but feel slightly sorry for her - but when all is said and done it was her own fault. |

I'm all for clearing the dodgy cars from the roads, but isn't the SORN an assumption of guilt ? (ie. that it IS on the road till you say it isn't)
What's next... having to turn up at a police station once a year to fill in a form about crimes you DIDN'T commit... otherwise you will be arrested for them _________________ WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root'... logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

It's an assumption of the default status, that a car is being used for its intended purpose. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

I don't see it that way... it's an assumption that it is *on the road* illegally until you state it isn't... so unless it's default status is to have it on the road illegally.....
I just don't agree that people should be required to state they *aren't* breaking the law... I see a SORN as another small but significant erosion of the presumption of innocence. _________________ WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root'... logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.
