Postby bigmart » Sun Aug 28, 2005 7:55 pm

hi - i've aquired a Sun Blade 300 ..
do not have the operating system and cannot guess the password
its running solaris and comes up with a nice looking log on screen
I have no idea about Unix or for that matter Linux.
I had hoped to load up a Linux OS and have a play.
can anyone help me by pass the login to load up another operating system?

Help and ideas appreciated.. if it's a waste of time just say i'll cut my losses.

Is the password to get into the machine....for example a BIOS password? or just to get into the OS its-self?
My knowledge comes with no warranty...........

If it is the Solaris login password as it sounds you should be able to boot from CD and install a new distro, if its a BIOS password it is a different matter entirely, pray that Sun do a reset jumper :)

In great *NIX tradition we can now chours "Read The 'Fine' Manual"

And HERE it is!

It runs a 500-MHz UltraSPARC-IIe processor so if you wanted to change it to Linux you would need the SPARC port of linux, Ultralinux.

But if you want to stick with Solaris, you can get Solaris for SPARC free of charge from Sun. (Solaris is here 10 but you can get earlier versions, and OpenSolaris by browsing the Sun website.)

SUSE has versions for sparc (someone requested 7.3 for sparc over the weekend in fact), as does debian and many others

Just to chime in - no, it's not a waste of time, it's a fine piece of hardware, just a bit different to your average x86 box.
If you decide to (re)install Solaris on it, check out http://www.sunfreeware.com/ where you can get most of the gnu tools (including compilers) and other free & open source goodies for various Solaris releases.
Hope this helps,

Nigel.
