I've tried other distros, but I can't seem to stay away from Mandrake for more than a few weeks Smile

I don't even like it that much any more and am looking to move on, but I just can't. It's addictive.

At work,
Smoothwall on the firewall
RH7.3 on the dataserver ( I know, but IBM wouldn`t support anything else for UniVerse when we installed it, and now it will cost us an arm, a leg and several other bodyparts to reinstall the database on a new version, and it works).
Win2K on our 2 remaining windows servers, Suse 9.3 on the other 2, SuSE ES on trial on our testbed unit.
Suse 9.2 on our customer service workstations, 9.3 on the engineer's data kiosk, windoze 2k or XP on most others, apart from the Macs, OSX/9.
Suse 9.3 and Windoze dual booting on our IBM field service laptops, RIP and a several live distros on CDroms that I carry with me.
Suse 9.3 dualboot with windoze on our showroom PC ( for demonstrating printers)

At home, Suse 9.3 on my desktop and (after a lot of persuasion, she wanted to stay with Mandrake) my wife`s.
Embeddix on my wife`s Zaurus, Windows mobile2003 (yeuk ) on my company supplied PDA/smartphone.
Amiga OS3.5 (still can`t get 3.9 to install) on my Amiga.
Windows 98 on my 7 year old grandson`s PC (He likes Buzz lightyear-give me time).

All in all, I was surprised how few OSes survive!

Embedix is what comes with the SL-5500... no X-server, but you can get VNC (although I haven't got that working properly yet on mine). What does the SL-C750 use ? TO find out, check the Version tab on the System Info app (Settings)
I'm thinking (eventually) of putting OpenZaurus on mine as I like the idea of moving the OS from RAMdisk onto the SD card. Anyone had any experience of that ?

I installed OZ about a year ago. Putting everything on the SD card involves a little work, setting up some symlinks, or you can leave 8MB in RAM. I've got everything on the SD card and it works well, although loading programs from SD is a little slower than from RAM.

I'm a redhat man at heart, which shows in the 2 fileservers and mail server I've set up at work - CentOS 3 on all of them. We also use IPCop (redhat based) for our proxy. I've got Ubuntu running for testing & running a php/mysql development server at home though Laughing

It depends. I think if you ask most people on the team, it will vary quite a bit depending on what day of the year it is.

We get through a lot of Linux. Graham switches between SUSE and Mandriva practically every week, and for example, I currently have 6 distros installed:

Mandriva2005
Gentoo
GentooAMD64
Fedora Core4
Debian
Ubuntu

While you would think we would know what we wanted, it's actually a bit like working in a sweet shop.

To keep this balanced we should comment on the alternatives:
netbsd, amiga os4,beos, etc, or .....
microsoft windows----or microsoft windows--- or microsoft windows

the hell with balance, who wants to use a proprietary, DRM protected, insecure OS?

I use Ubuntu (recently upgraded to Breezy) at work, and PCLinuxOS .92 at home. Ubuntu upgrades also seem to require a week of post-upgrade wrestling to get the multimedia stuff working again. PCLinuxOS, thus far, moves up even major versions without a hiccup. If you like Mandriva, you'll love PCLOS -- all the polish, none of the bugs.
