Hi all...
1) What do you do for a living?
2) And do you get to use computers during the working day?
3) If 2) is yes, doing what?
4) Do you do any coding?
5) Any language preference?
6) If 4) is yes why?
7) Or, finally, are you purely a computer user?
Me:-
1) I`m an electronics, (RF), engineer.
2) No. The only time I get onto computers is in my own time.
3) N/A.
4) Yes, but I am real bad at it...
5) Assembly, Python and others.
6) N/A.
7) I am an experimenter. _________________ 73...

2) Yep
3) Installing/running/fixing 'em, and browsing t' Internet.
4) A bit
5) Perl, Bash, DCL
6) It's a tool, sometimes I need to write stuff for management/maintenance etc.

5. Not really. Regularly use C#, Javascript, VB.NET, Java.

1) Computer Systems Officer (Network/Systems Administrator), IT Teacher, IT Support Consultant
2) Every day - Windows, Mac OS X & Linux
3) Manage servers, manage users, manage network & internet connections, web server admininistrator (student sites and Moodle server), fix end user problems, teach IT and multimedia and anything else that comes up.
4) Yes, web (HTML, CSS, PHP, Perl), shell scripting - wish I had time for more.
5) What ever does the job.
6) Solve problems, automate some tasks, web site management
7) I try to be a computer user - I'd like to do more image editing (I'd also like to take more photos but time is a problem)  |

1)Linux System Administrator is my job title. My workload is IT Manager.
2) Yes
3)Running the company, my desktop, mail servers, etc.
4) No code, very little shell scripting in fact!
5) English
6) I was not good at French!
7) Administrator and tweaker. Just now I am working on following the NSA guidlines on securing a RH server. It will be an outward facing SSH machine. _________________ I cannot deny anything that I did not say. |

- English as previously mentioned, however PHP is my coding language preference. Just got introduced to perl today.
- Cos a) i enjoy it and b) cos I would fail my course if I didn't...
- If but user you mean I use one then yes, if you mean do I do 'advance' stuff like break it (wait users do that as well....) then sometimes

1. It Director for a small office equipment company and freelance writer.
2. Yes all the time
3. Maintain and support the company network, applications, databases, CRM, and telecoms equipment, support website development for both company websites. Install, troubleshoot and support our products in our customer's networks. MFDs mainly, but also associated software- Office, print management, scanning, document management, print accounting software, etc. and write for a few Computer magazines in my spare time.
4. yes, when I have to.
5. Whatever is required, but mainly PCL or Postscript, DOS and Bash scripting, HTML and XML, and various others, including (historically) machine code a and assembler, I learn enough to fix things. I really can't stand programming.
6. It's my job

Adhesives engineer here.
I advise and test on which adhesives and tapes stick things together, and also test them to make sure they stay stuck!
Day job means an XP laptop for the usual office stuff.

2) yes
3) If 2) creating and updating websites and online databases
4) yes but would like to do more, sadly a lot of the web templates I use are locked
5) at work it is mainly xhtml and css i use but i am slowly learning actionscript3 and java/jquery. my fave language is probably visual basic but i haven't used that in a job since i was 15
6) If 4) i can alter stylesheets, create webpages, create database queries, create scripts and create flash animations
7) i am a user as i have the classic "any other duties" plus i do a fair bit of image editing and database work. but i also develop and create things |

3) Everything - workstation for: helpdesk, email, internet, remote access tools, DTP, coding.
4) Yes, sometimes - web mainly (Classic ASP (yuck), PHP, Javascript, C#, AutoIt, Windows batch, Perl, Bash)
5) PHP and Javascript.
6) I like coding. Sometimes it helps accomplish administrative tasks, or to modify open source code to do what we want, or create bespoke internal applications.
7) Only when I'm working on producing publicity material (newsletters, booklets...) I become an IT user of the network I otherwise maintain & support  _________________

5) Most experienced with C++. I also like Ada, some experience with Java and I also look into Python at the moment.
6) If 4) Its my job and I also like it a lot so I do it in my spare time as well.
7) Not sure what this means but I use my computer for many things. I consider programming to be "using" as well. |

3) Using a whole medley of apps and tools for logging, reporting, testing etc...
4) Yes, in my own time. I did get an interview for an in house programming position at the same company, but didn't get it.
5) Depends on the programming task. (Since so many of you are playing the spoken language card I'm going to add Latin because it's so nice. I kind of suck at it though because I have to learn Finnish)
6) Some people do crosswords. I try to program.
