Hi goons...
Apologies for typos I am using my netbook.
The story so far...
Well my notebook has developed a fault with the wireless card
and I can`t be arsed to find out what is wrong with it, as it is at
least 4 years old now.
It was connected to the works network for quite a while during
the working day but when the failure occured a couple of weeks
ago I decided to use this netbook running PCLinuxOS 2009.
Well LAST Monday I went through the setup and it all worked fine.
And it logged in Tuesday, Wendesday and Thursady all fine.
Come last Friday it would not get into the system.
The Modem/Router was there and was talking to my netbook
but no network... WHAT?!?
No amount of coaxing would get me into the network so
after hours of messing about I got very pissed off and
abandoned it.
Today Monday 13th September 2010 and I`m up and running
as though nothing has happened.
WTF! Any ideas?
I haven`t got any...
So here I am writing this story to you and uploading via the works
network,(shrugs). _________________ 73...

When I've seen this sort of behaviour, it was usually caused by the modem/router, power cycling that generally got things working again. _________________ "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein) |

| I had issues with my wifi that way. I reset the router and all was fine. Maybe it was as simple as that. |

Hi Nelz et al...
Did the power down routine twice, that was why I wrote...
"no amount of coaxing"... :o(
I really have no idea why and not much gets past me... :o/
BTW it is on the "Other OS" forum as the network is Windows
based... :'( _________________ 73...

Common one with wifi cards is that the Firmware sometimes needs a cold boot to reload it.
Especially infuriating on a dual boot machine. _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!

Hi wyliecoyoteuk...
If you mean a total power down of the netbook, including
battery removal for at least 3 minutes, then this was one
of my first tests... :o(
Nothing worked...
All of the other wireless connected Windows machines
were working however... :o/ _________________ 73...

A couple of non hardware possibilites:-
You picked up a connection from another wireless router, not your own. If this was the case you might or might not get an IP address, and if you did you might still be unable to do anything. If you've now got connected to your own router then the problem would disappear.
You had a duplicate IP address that's being used by something else on your network, this could cause all sorts of odd things to happen. If that other box is now down or has obtained another address then your problem would disappear.
You'll probably never know what was wrong, unless it happens again _________________ I have been touched by his noodly appendage. |

I hadn't realised this referred to powercycling the router, I thought it meant you wrapped plenty of shielded cable around it _________________ "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein) |

Hmmm, I guess I should have expected that from you... ;o]
But, I don`t think there is such a word as "coaxing" WRT
electrical cable. :P _________________ 73...

Really, Bazza, I think most of the users of this forum would have got it...
You shouldn't let 1sf (troll) drag your estimation of the intelligence of others so low. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Bazza did state "for those who don't get it", which certainly applies to 1sf (troll). _________________ "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein) |
