SOLVED Mouse and touchpad stopped working after kernel up...

Postby alloydog » Wed Aug 31, 2005 11:44 am

With BeatrIX, a Debian based distirbution, I just recently upgraded the kernel (using Synaptic - but the results were the same using apt-get), from 2.6.7 to 2.6.12-7-686.
Both the mouse and touchpad on my laptop stopped working.

On the same laptop a while back, I went from 2.6.7 to 2.6.12-6-686 with no problems.

After this new problem, I did a clean installation and today upgraded from 2.6.7 to 2.6.12-8-686 and again the mouse & touchpad do not work.

I think it is something to do with the modules, as the contents of the respecttive module files are different:

I'm guessing that you used the kernel images to do upgrade?

The difference between the modules is pretty alarming. I'd be inclined to post to one of the Debian forums such as Debian help with details of your mouse and touchpad and maybe with the results of running diff on the lists.

Fixed it.
I just did search for linux-headers-2.6.12-6-686 and got :
http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/in ... reezy.main

I put http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ into Synaptic, and it worked.
The kernel has been updated and the mouse & touchpad still work.

I'm still intrigued to know why they stopped working with the newer kernels - I think it is something to do with the modules, possibley, as the two files, modules-2.6.7 and modules-2.6.12-7-686/-8-686 were quite different. I'll look at what modules-2.6.12-6-686 lists later.
