Newbie needs help

Postby juniper » Wed Aug 31, 2005 12:33 pm

Hello to all you Linuxers!

Well, I finally made the dip into the Linux world by purchasing the Linux Format Special edition mag "Get started with Mandriva Linux".

I have just installed Mandriva and after a few hair raising moments it installed fine. Except......

I get an error message at start up from the Soundserver - The KDE Crash Handler:

Short Description
The application Soundserver (artsd) crashed and caused the Signal 11 (SIGSEGV).

The backtrace is as follows

I am a total newbie to Linux and have very little understanding of what this message means. I have just played an original CD using KsCD with no problems but when I try to load Amarok I get an error message stating that the artsd service could be loaded.

Can anyone advise?

Thanx in advance.

This usually happens to artsd when a library is missing or damaged. Did you get any errors or warnings while installing?

No I did not. The only problems I had was that the installation did not follow the path as described in the magazine when it came to the partitioning the the Hard Drive. I did not get the filesystem types windows displayed - but other than that things went OK.

However, I have followed the instructions in the magazine for the updates CD but it fails to load it. It reports media errors:

Unable to add medium, errors reported.
Unable to retrieve pathname.

I am following the advice in the magazine but cannot make sense of this.

I couldn't make sense of the instructions about adding the updates CD either. If you do exactly as set out in the magazine, you do indeed get an error message. I think something has been left out of the instructions.

I eventually got the CD to add by fiddling around. I seem to remember that after clicking on Add custom and ticking Removable device and browsing for Path or mount point, I had the cdrom listed in the left hand column. I then double-clicked on cdrom and clicked on Add, which added "main-updates 13/07/05" in the right hand column. I had no idea what I was supposed to put in "Name" so I put Main Updates CD4(cdrom4) and for "Path or mount point" /mnt/cdrom/main_updates was already entered. I selected All packages, by update availability, Upgradeable. This installed 95 packages from CD4. There was nothing listed under Addable.

Sorry if this is not very clear, either - but I can't remember now exactly what I did.

I think I have installed them although I would not put money on it. Thank you for your input.

In the Add Custom window I gave the direct path to the files - it was not enough to point it to the cdrom, I had to point it directly to the files on the cdrom.

However, this still has not resolved my original problem.
