I luv these guys
http://www.bluehost.com/tell_me_more.html
Perhaps a bit overkill, but when the £ was 2:1, it made an even better deal. The £ has slipped a bit, but did bound up 1.7 which was handy.
I just paid £65 for a year with unlimited space, domains, transfer, blah, blah. And more importantly, linux and ssh access
Yes they do imap, smtp, pop.
EDIT:
WOW Towy, 5quidhost do shell access too! _________________ I think, therefore I compile |

Wow £5, that's fantastic. Though on the site FAQ, it says it doesn't sell domains, but to use a domain registrar. I don't understand quite what I'd have to do for an existing domain I already own. Do they mean domain registrar as in Nominet, or would I need to find a company to manage my domain name + use 5quidhost?

Richie, when you bought your domain, you probably (unless you paid a small fortune) purchased it through a registrar such as godaddy, tucows, 123-reg, 1and1 etc and with this you'd have an online account to manage the domains, which includes specifiying the nameserver. This would normally point to the nameserver owned by the registrar, but you can re-point it to the namserver owned by 5quidhosts, which they would tell you. Then you essentially "park the domain" with 5quid.
People type in www.mydomain.com and the DNS servers are told to look at 5quid_nameserver.com which inturn points to the actual server where your domain is hosted. _________________ I think, therefore I compile |

Hi there,
I find that Linux Format itself seem to be using Fasthosts and based on that I bought a couple of domains through them and also they are hosting my website now.
But my experience with them for email hosting has been painful so far.
I use Linux machines and they are only providing Outlook Exchange Server 2010.
They are claiming customers can use Thunderbird as email clients on their own computers but ever since I have started using Fasthosts and their email hosting, I have problems.
Spent long time on phone to their support and everytime they want to know my email password and are saying that they can not troubleshoot unless I give them the entire password - I did that yesterday over phone. Gave them my password over phone and still problem was not solved. They then suggested that I reset my password - which I was happy to do as I wanted to change it anyway since I had given them the old password over phone. I then changed the password while still on phone with their help. Then they said I need to wait for at least half an hour for their systems to update properly and asked me to try again later.
I did that. Problem did not get solved. Sent an email to the support team and they have responded asking for my email password again and saying that they can not proceed unless I provide them with my password.
To me this sounds all unprofessional.
Why do they need my password to provide support?
Even after giving them password are they able to sort out the problem? NO. So why do they ask for password?
To begin with they have set up their servers to accept password in plain text format - password gets transmitted in plain text over the internet. Thunderbird is never happy with that.
They also seem to be using incorrect Security Certificates and Thunderbird keeps complaining - it even says that the site may be a fraudulent one and even if I accept the risk and store a permanent exception, Thunderbird does not seem to be happy at all. Something is very wrong at their end.
I am thinking of moving my hosting away from Fasthosts - both webhosting and email hosting.
They seem to be a complete Microsoft house with Microsoft's ideas about on-line security - though they claim the webhosting is based on Apache on Linux. I am not so sure about that.
They don't seem to read their support ticket emails, nor do they seem to see the screen captures that were sent - even though they ask for them.
Very unhappy with Fasthosts. |

I'd be extremely unhappy if a host wanted my pwd all the time - they should have enough diagnostics to be able to sort things out without needing that.
Sounds like untrained amateurs, who don't know how to do things properly. _________________ Derek |

Sad part is I started using their services as I saw that Linux Format has their 'Mail Server' the regular column in the magazine sponsored by Fasthhosts. A misleading situation now that I look at it more carefully. First I thought that this website and all the services on this website were all provided by Fasthosts - but apparently it is just the 'Mailserver' column in the magazine which is sponsored by them - may not have anything to do with where this website itself is hosted. I might even be completely wrong.
But the fact remains that I selected Fasthosts thinking that their services are kind of recommended by Linux Format since the Fasthosts name appears prominently on the magazine pages particularly on the 'MailServer' pages.
It is ironical that I am having problems with the mail server services that are provided by Fasthosts.
On this website however now, I see lot of adverts for UKFast - which is probably a different company?
I have been a subscriber for Linux Format for years and years now and have been implicitly trusting their reviews etc - but this experience of mine with Fasthosts is bad. My trust in Linux Format itself is being shaken a bit now. |
