Hi, all.
I am very interested in studying open source software development, using distance learning in the UK.
I have looked at the Open University, but it doesn't seem to be quite what I want.
I am a novice Bash scripter that wants to develop his skills in languages such as Perl and Python, to name but two. My eventual aim is to move from my current linux sys admin type role, into something a bit more specialised. In addition I feel that should I acquire these skills, I will be able to give something back to the open source community, other than bug reports.
All comments welcomed.
Thanks,
Chris. |

You can look at PHP Certification, Perl eLearners and Brainbench but there aren't many formal certifications for Open Source Applications like the Microsoft Office Specialists certifications.
I'm sure you can find more by joining the programming language newsgroups and Usenet/Chat channels. |

The problem I used to find is most employers are looking more for industrial experiance in the languages rather than qualifications. Which is the problem when you need the industrial exeriance to get the job that gives you the industrial exeriance. _________________ Andrew Hutchings, Linux Jedi

Thanks, guys. I'm not necessarily after a qualification, I just want a structured way of learning these skills.
Whenever I pick-up a Perl or Python book, I get so far in and then get de-motivated. I would like some kind of course, that perhaps has deadlines and a mentor/ tutor, who can help pout if necessary.
Unfortunately, I am not in the position where I can take 3 years out of work, to go to university.
Many thanks,
Chris. |
