| Can I assume all webcams work with Linux? Any suggestions for hardware and software. I use Ubuntu and occasionally SuSe. |

You can assume it.. but you'd be wrong
There is no standard interface for webcams, each one requires a specific driver, and not all have them for Linux. Here's one list of webcams (and other USB devices) supported in Linux: http://www.linux-usb.org/devices.html
