I have installed my printer, Canon i560, using Turboprint and it works, however I want to print from other computers on the network and installed CUPS, now when I start Print Manager I get the following in a warning box:
Unable to retrieve the printer list. Error message received from manager:
Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: connection refused.
where is the printer list located and can I amend it manually?
TIA

Make sure the cups server is actually running.
Use the web frontend on port 631 to configure the printers is my advice... |

dick@ubuntu:~$sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys start
Password:
* Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd
dick@ubuntu:~$
dick@ubuntu:~$ ps aux | grep cupsd
cupsys 7896 0.0 0.5 5712 2820 ? SNs 06:41 0:00 /usr/sbin/cupsd
dick 10456 0.0 0.1 3036 728 pts/6 S+ 16:51 0:00 grep cupsd
going to localhost:631 brings up the printer page but it has in red writing across the top of the page:Administrative tasks have been disabled for security reasons. Please use Menu System > Administration > Printing
As I said the printer works using generic lpd but Printer Manager crashes when I try to select cups. _________________ still looking for that door into summer

| Bah, dratted super-paranoid debian-types. I can't check for you at the moment. Maybe someone else can help in the meantime, otherwise I'll take a look tomorrow. |

/etc/cups/cupsd.conf should show the location of the log files. Check these for any reasons why the connection was refused. You may need to raise the logging level. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

I thought that maybe re-installing the entire kubuntu might fix it. Did that this morning, updated and upgraded, and it seems to be something in KDE both konqueror and kcmshell crash when starting print manager. I have filed a bug report because I replicate the crash each time I try to start it!
