Arggghhh! Evolution and KDE 3.4 problem...

Postby gundam_rx78nt1 » Sun Jul 31, 2005 9:57 pm

I have just finished installing Evolution to my linux box (Gentoo 2005) and this process changed my whole KDE menu. I have lost some of the menu enteries that I had and all that time arranging the menu for my liking has gone to crap. I want to know if there is anyway of restoring my menu back to what it was prior so I don't have to spend that time again? This is soo fustrating!

The simplest way would be to restore ~/.kde3.4 from your backup.

I'm assuming you wouldn't be foolish enough to not backup something as important as your DE settings, but if something had mysteriously happened to your backup (filesystem corruption, abducted by aliens, eaten by your dog because he couldn't find any homework) you could try running kappfinder to recreate the missing entries.

Being a newbie would you be so kind as to explain some more about DE settings and backing up in general?

I was being a little sarcastic there, sorry. Your KDE settings are all stored in .kde3.4 in your home directory, it is a good idea to keep a copy of this directory somewhere. In your situation, running kappfinder is probably your best option. Run it as your normal user, not as root.
