I have always wanted to use Debian because of the amount of software that comes with the distribution but I always find reasons not to use it as my main Linux distro. My main distro at the moment is minislack which is great. The debian release I received with the magazine this month loaded easily. When I went to connect to the internet I found I had to load wvdial to get it working. After doing this and inputting telephone numbers the program dialled out connected and then died. What am I doing wrong Question I have a serial modem on /dev/ttsy0 which is recognised by wvdial. The same details input to the slackware pppsetup program allows connection seamlessly.

As I have never used dialup (only dsl/cable) im not to sure about dialup. However I wouldn't rely on programs like that to make your internet connection. Take the time to read up on ppp and configure it accordingly. Then you can connect by doing something similar to: ppp -ddial isp

Have a look at http://www.linuxdoc.org/ for more information.

Which version of deb is it ?

wvdial is a reliable program, it fronts for ppp

Show the config for your current wvdial, how does the ppp config on your slack differ. With out the post hows to know ?

diffs/examples please, for
--------------------------------------
/etc/ppp/*
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/wvdial.conf

Make sure you're a member of the dialout and dip groups in /etc/group.

If that doesn't do it, try running pppconfig and then using pon to connect and poff to disconnect.

The version of Debian I have is the Debian Sarge stable release which has been getting worked on for the past three years. So I assume that is 3.1.

Thanks to those who replied. I appear to have resolved the problem by putting nameserver addresses in /etc/resolv.conf.
