|
|
I've noticed over the last few weeks that I'm receiving significantly more SPAM, something in the region of 4 or 5 times as much as previously.
Also there seems to be an increase in the proportion of out and out P0rn mails as opposed to the v1agra / m0rtgage / my dead husband left me $1,000,000,000 in a nigerian bank account type SPAM.
I was wondering if others have noticed a similar increase, or whether I've found my way onto another list somewhere. |

I find the spam ebbs and flows and changes in nature. Once upon a time it seemed to be all porn and viagra, then I started getting stocks and shares and now I get phishing scams too. I find the overall quantity increases whenever a new type appears.
UKFSN's spam filters catch a lot of it, my KMail POP filters catch most of the rest and give me the opportunity to delete anything unidentified on the server. I never look at anything except the headers, unless I'm especially bored. Sometimes the same titles appear in my free Yahoo account spam folder.
I haven't been offered any Nigerian millions as far as I can tell, I almost feel cheated. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Oddly enough I'm with 1sf (troll) on this, in that if I was in the market for v1agra then I'd just google for someone flogging it I wouldn't respond to a SPAM.
On 1sf (troll)'s other point I certainly haven't registered for YouTube, and as far as I can remember I haven't signed up to any new sites or forums for a long time.
It's not causing me too much grief as all my mail is piped through a Gmail account which does a pretty good job of coraling all the SPAM so I guess I'll just live with it. I don't mind the 419 scams so much as they can be a bit of a laugh, and some of the stuff on http://www.419eater.com/index.htm is really worth a read. |

If I was in the market for viagra, I'd go to see my doctor. I don't especially approve of self-medication and as there are risks associated with viagra I would want to be sure I wasn't a member of an at-risk group. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

| I've recently been getting v1agra spam to my email account which is my own domain name and has been spam free since I made it 2 years ago. Usually one a day. I don't know how the hell I got on spamming lists but I'd sure as hell like to find out. Thunderbird junks them all effectively but its an annoyance that some turd has managed somehow to get me on a spam list. |

If your email address is very short, you might just be picking up randomly-addressed spam, even if your address has never appeared on the net. My father had a similar problem -- he got an email address with three letters before the @, and before he'd even sent a message he was getting spammed.
Incidentally, according to an email I received yesterday, I've apparently won the 'Microsoft Lottery'. Bless.

Oh, I used to get that with Win98: if I reached the end of the day and got to shut it down normally, I felt like I'd won something _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Thats an idea ... yes, it makes good sense.
I haven't noticed any real sudden increase, but what i get does seem to slowly increase over time. As my isp dosen't filter their incoming, i have to pay for it anyway, filtering or no filtering.
porn seems to be being replaced with business scames though. And most of it seems to be referenced via the cc field.
My latest, somewhat primitive strategy, it to just let the mail box fill up on the server. It only holds about 200 mails anyway. Then just empty it before i need to send anything out, so that a response can get in.
Dodgy method really though, and means i could well miss something legit ... oh well. Damn the buggers.

200 mails? That's extremely low. My mailserver stats show it rejected over 3000 mails yesterday, peaking at 29 per minute; that would have filled your mailbox in less than seven minutes! _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

Good grief, you are popular
Mine works out at about 50 to 60 a day, it does fluctuate. So i am lucky really, in that respect. The above though (3000), can add up to a fair hunk of down load tally. And you have to pay for that !

I don't have to pay for it, and those mails were rejected during the SMTP conversation with my server. I have Postfix set up to perform various tests, such as is the HELO from a real domain, and refuse the connection if it fails one of the tests. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. aha ... i see, ... a better way.
I just use a basic dialup isp account and get charged based on what comes in their end. With mail i just use sylpheed to fetch it from them. So, whether or not it's fetched, it will count as it comes in to them.
Which is why i just let the box limit fill up, which seems to be around 200 messages. Once full, it just bounces of their sever and isn't counted as an input (grin). Not that eloquent i know ... but what the heck (grin).
A rate like 3000 would floor me
