I am trying to set up a file server for home. i have a little experianvce with linux as have set up a couple of apache servers but i am not sure what distro wuld be the easiest for a file server. i thought of using mandrake 10.1 as this is what the apache that i made used but am not sure as struggled to find a lot of documentation on the web. does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

You didn't say what clients you will be serving to, so I'm assuming you mean Windows. If it's going to be a dedicated box, you can use ClarkConnect or SME Server (contribs.org) which are excellent file servers. Both of these have samba for windows networking, and SME can even act like an NT domain controller. Neither of these have a local GUI, but have a web-based interface to manage the server.

If you are using mandrake try karoshiathome, we wrote it for peope with no linux knowledge. It is in its early stages but in fully working order. You can find it : www.karoshiathome.org.uk and afterwards you can have a play around. It servers both Linux and Windows clients with both static ips and dchp...

ta. yes i am going to be serving to windows but also i have a linux box desktoop/apache running mandrake will that be able to access these programs as well

Karoshi@Home does allow connections from both Linux and Windows PC's.
