|
|
Hi,
I have, for my sins, been a fairly competent MS Access/SQL 2000 developer for a number of years, but this has been extremely frustrating as you may imagine. However I have managed to build a very comprehensive business system which supports a call centre, sales orders and customer service.
Does anyone have any recommendations for an open source Rapid Application Development tool/framework for developing web applications.
I have looked at Omnis and MTStudio which are both proprietry. I would very much like to use an open source system for an open source project I am considering starting.
There is quite alot of buzz around Ruby and Ruby on Rails, which I am investigating at the moment.
All suggestions welcome.
Andrew Ballantine. |

I too spend my days infront of EM and QA, hopefully going to switch to postgresql, php and python in the next year or two...lol maybe...
Web application RAD tools, there are of course the usualy suspects from borland, might be worth a look.
This company has done some nice db tools, not to sure on the web front though.

There are basic editors / ide's like Quanta (see kde), or bluefish, but they really are for manual coding.
Oracle do a surprising amount, jdeveloper can be used for a lot of stuff, again might be worth a look.
IRC or alt.whatever.newsgroups might specialise a bit more with this, especially as these forums have only bounced back recently so the audience is not that big at the mo. _________________ I think, therefore I compile |

Hi,
have a look at the mono project www.go-mono.com. This is an open-source implementation of .Net. Started off by some guys at ximian who were then bought out by Novell so it has solid corporate backing. Also, have a look at the Eclipse project which is a great Java IDE (actually much more than that). |

I'm not sure, but I think qtdesigner may be free.
It also might be a RAD tool, but I'm not sure since I haven't used it in years, and even then I only used it briefly.
The only other one I can think of at the minute would be Gambas, which is a bit like VB, except uses a more sensable design. |

Hi,
Check out ATK at www.achievo.org/atk. This isn't a gui RAD but you can get a web based application up and running quite quickly once you understand the framework. By creating a framework which provides all of the coding for presentation layer and logic, it leaves you to concentrate on the business logic. I mentioned it a couple of threads up from this one, so far I am pretty impressed and I am looking forward to coding using this framework.
HTH,

Have you had a look at the developerWorks from IBM?
The web site is http://www-130.ibm.com/developerworks/
There are Windows & Linux versions available for database and web applications. _________________ Regards from

If you come from a Borland Cbuilder/Delphi background you are quickly going to find out just how spoilt (in a nice way) you have been while using these tools.
You can achieve the same things with Linux but, it is done by using a collection of bits & bobs that hang together by a very weak thread.
You can probably design, write & deploy a Delphi database app in less time than it will take you to get one of the Linux database servers up and running.
Practice, practice & more practice is where it's at and it feels like trying to work with one arm missing.
I've used
Kdevelop for c++ coding
QT libraries for database access components
Postgres database
pgsql ? Postgres data table design
All seperate programmes that more or less fit together and allow you to get data into a database. I'm still working on how to get pretty printed reports out though. |

Carn't miss an opportunity to give www.fltk.org a plug. It's about as standard as it gets. But i quite like Athena. Probably more a learning tool, than a work tool though. But, a nice smooth designer, none the less.
Carn't remember reading any comment on "BXPro 6" from lxf33B cd, November 2002 when it was there. One of those expensive environments i think. Still got the disc. I was always meaning to try its' demo out. One never knows (grin)

or just use Kylix, unless you're excluding this because it's not open source? |

not excluding kylix, it just wont f*in run, damn complicated borland products. and. Delphi just gets the job done for windows. Kylix throws up errors saying it can't find or access a shared file.
can paste error message from kylix if it would help.
