Lovely Jubbly! Let us know if you see a 10.1 version of the Jem Report.

I checked to see here if Amazon had the retail version yet and, rather strangely, they're calling it "No Operating System".

Getting things such as DVD playing working should be pretty much the same as for 10, except the package locations will be under 10.1.

I think they mean it doesn't require another operating system to run... now we all know that, but some amazon clients may not.

I think 1sf (troll) might dispute the latter, and the rest of us the former :P

You could always try putting a boxed set of suse in jelly...

Delta's downloaded, applied to RC3 ISO's, mashed 5 ISO's into 1 DVD, burnt and ready.

I just hope yast is back to behaving itself along with the patching process that seemed a little broke in RC2 (and for me RC3 too, but I think that was just due to me trying to go via the upgrade route from RC2-3).

Also, I have pre-ordered from amazon too, feeling flush enough to put it on the visa and contribute some support money back, even if Suse is no longer German, still think its worth doing when possible.
I think, therefore I compile

I've downloaded the CDs and installed on a subsidiary machine to see whether I want to replace SuSE 10.0 on my main desktop and my laptop. Some of it looks good, but some not so. The software updater has changed and I think I've found my way round that, but one thing puzzles me. In 10.0, Yast > Online Update also offered you some proprietary things, and I was particularly looking for the nvidia driver and the MS core fonts. But not a dicky-bird in 10.1, at least not yet. I know that this release is only just out and perhaps the patches will be available in due course, but am I looking in the wrong place? They're not in the addons CD; in 10.0 you downloaded them - and Novell/SuSE packaged them in auto-installing packages which was handy.

Also, 10.0 auto-mounted my Windows partition but 10.1 has not. Neither has it recognised the on-board card-reader which 10.0 handles with aplomb.

Any thoughts, Rhakios? But I'm glad they've got rid of the green reptile. That's definitely an improvement.

spottedcat: Try system:/ then wait AGES, it picks up all partitions on your system, well should do, takes a long(ish) time the first time round.

10.1 is a surprise to me in that how buggy the package system was only a few weeks ago.....fingers crossed :)

As far as nvidia stuff goes, and TT fonts, it _might_ get hooked up with the actual boxed release. So far this is just the GM, goldmaster, which is supposed to be what is released to be sold, but the extra stuff may come online in the next few weeks...

Personnally I would wait until its been out the door for a month before moving from 10.0, there's not enough changes to warrent the grief IMHO. In fact, a lot of whats on there is _old_ now, ie gnome 2.12, kaffine 0.7.1 etc And why is yast so damn slow? It's annoying that its so slow (always been like that). And for me, its still not verbose enough in whats happpening. ie when it sais its searching for online updates, there's no screen telling you the server its trying, the kbs speed, how long its waited, how far its got to go etc. Your just left staring at a screen with a spinning hourglass (bubbles like Fedora) thinking "has it crashed, is it downloading, whats happenning?"

But its always been like that, at least the downloads from the update server are faster than the terrible speeds from fedora 5, ie 10-15k/sec
I think, therefore I compile

There's nothing in updates yet except for opera and pdns. As nordle says, I'd give it a while yet.
