What kind does LXF use ?

I remember there was some mention on the old site ....

Is there any reason for the type used ....

Reading on 64bit Gentoo coming on a DVD ... yes, good news.

Just kinda curious, i guess Smile

What do you mean by "protocols"? If you mean filesystem, it's ISO9660. If you mean the boot system used, then it depends on what we are booting. if the distro chose to use isolinux, so do we.

The +R, -R, RW associations. I remember you mentioned something about 'density' in relation to those on a page in the old site, iirc. As would e obvious, I'm not very up on those concerns, so can't really judge how significant they might even be.

I used the term 'protocols' as i though they may refere to how the device firmware delt with writing and reading.

Though, for all i'd know ... they may refer to something completely different.

Basically trying to save myself from making a bad/limited purchase on a unit.

The coers discs are none of DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW or DVD+RW, they are DVD-ROM discs. The others are all types of recordable discs, whereas production discs are pressed, not recorded.

If you're thinking of buying a recorder, almost all of them handle all five types of disc anyway.

Here's something I've wondered about: on the occasions that LXF has included a double-sided DVD, why was that format chosen over a double-layer DVD? And: would carrying a (full-up!) double-layer DVD with each issue drive up production costs (or nelz's blood pressure) unacceptably?

If that issue is already out, it hasn't got this far yet (grin) ...I'm really looking forward to that. I'm been planning on doing a kind of,' from scratch' type of build, using the stage-1 package as a jumping off point. It might be cheating a bit, but ... a person has got to start somewhere.

Ok, i can see what you mean by pressed discs'. Your disc will act as copy for a press run. But ... is there much of an issue with those different types, between themselves.

It would be mainly for the computer ... backups and magazine discs. And hopfully the occasional iso image (grin), if i can wrangle the download allocation/time.

Best to get a unit that includes the lot i guess. hmmm thanks for that, i'll remember the hint for video players Smile

Got it figured ... seems i was completely on the wrong track. What i though were protocols are really formatting techniques Rolling Eyes
