Johnny Walker is quite nice, I agree. Getting through half a bottle a night?? Damn that could cost a lot Very Happy

Having said that we have a customer who buys a litre of blended whisky every two days or so, it seems to happen to quite a few people. I'm not capable of that, because I just can't forget how expensive it is. Got my eye on a nice bottle of Oban, just can't decide whether I can justify the money.

Bearing in mind the way some distilleries bang on about their stills being heated by burning peat and this contributing to the flavour, I am inclined to wonder why they don't just admit that the malting ovens are heated by burning peat and any peat or smoke flavours are likely to be due to this. Rolling Eyes

Ah but that would be telling wouldn't it? Whisky can be quite mysterious, it keeps up the snobbiness, I once got told you could taste the sugar far too much in one (I forget which) I tried it, and it was a little on the sweet side, but I wouldn't have said sweet even comes close.

I think thats because it's addictive, along with having a few other side effects. Not that i'm one to talk there Wink

I think its as much habit as being chemically addicted to it, sitting with a drink does seem to help the day unwind, although Czech scientists have now shown that drinking between 0.3 and 0.5 litres of beer a day (approximately 5% abv, not proof thats something different) is good for you, increases the good cholestorol (whatever that is) in the blood, and also in/decreases antioxidants, i forget which.
Incidentally are people aware that the UK police force as a whole are currently trying to ban the sale of high alcohol beers like tennents and bavaria? I may be wrong but if an alcoholic cant get his tennents then surely he will just buy whisky or white spirit?

NZ scientists have determined that large amounts of alcohol is actually good for the heart. But a killer on the liver. hmmmmm,

Any way you look at it, you will be seeing double ...

Come to think of it, i always though every one had german scientists really. I guess they must have just run out (grin).

Alcohol really is just maskar xxxx in essence. A bottle of alcohol base, a few drops of cheap oil. Give it a black lable and put it on the top shelf. Charge the earth. An exclusive fashion item is born, i really do not mean any offence at all there either. I used to do a bit of brewing at one time, so i do have some background, well, along with some other interesting agricultural hobbys (very_big_grin.png).

One can get these chem things, like, little bottles of stuff ... one drop ... there you go, a head. Another drop of something else, a different taste. Like, hay ... out of the same production vat you can get two opposing company products !.

Though, being a purist, i just used a prefab can of resches (thats an .au product, very clean, light tast, clear colour, a little spicey or possibly fresh) and worked it up with malt syrup, and dextrose to get a more heavy bodied result.

But as with most cultural things ... it largely depends on the generally associated perceptions.

With the "heart" bit, something i was listening to on the ABC over here recently. There was no real evidence to support the promoted health associations. Except in terms of the heart. It had been found to have a relaxing effect on over stressed heart muscles. But the amount/time required, also produced acute deteriorations elsewhere, such as in the liver. Seemed like a typical paradox. It certainly has been an entrenched part of our culture for a long time though.

Varieties/Blends (grin) ... if a person drinks to much water, they will likely drown.
