Hello!

Would it be possible, at some point, to do an idiots guide to installing files from .tgz, .tar etc?

I have been trying to do this for some time now but have never managed to do it successfully!

Yes - just like those ones.

I was thinking of something more along the lines of what is "make" and what does it do?

What do you do when you have unpacked a file?

It doesnt tell you that now does it? No! Wink

Such an article might tell you what to do on most occasions, but it can't tell you what to do with all source packages. Some people include an installer, some a special build script, or the package might need qmake or some other procedure. If you read the README and INSTALL files, plus run ./configure --help before attempting compilation, you will normally find out all you need to know.
