Synaptic failure

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Tue Aug 26, 2014 2:21 pm

Hi guys!

Half an hour I used the Package Manager to install some Java updates.

Just now I attempted to use Synaptic to install some extra software and got the following error message.

Code: Select all
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/download.ebz.epson.net_dsc_op_stable_debian_dists_lsb3.2_main_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I have not the faintest idea of what is happening. It may be relevant that I have an Epson Stylus SX130, which was a problem to install. I asked (and received help) to sort out that, as I asked for help on this site under Printers, and I have also queried a possible Synaptic failure, under Discussions on this site.

Could some kind person make time to show me the out of this mess, please.

I am using Mint 17-64 with i5, 8Gb DDR and 500Gb HDD.

One half of my HDD is taken up with the old Mint 16-32 installation, for reference.

Best

Synaptic failure

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Wed Aug 27, 2014 1:18 pm

It occurs to me that I might start as follows:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get uninstall synaptic,

and then

sudo apt-get install synaptic

Followed by a reboot.

Would this work, or am I being naive?

Please would someone answer?

Synaptic failure

Further info.

From the cmd line I asked for apt-get to fetch and install a game and was met with the same error message as from synaptic, as above.

I could navigate to the relevant file and inspect it but this is outwith my competence.

Please help. or I shall have to re-install and then go thro' the same problems again.

What does

Code: Select all
ls -l /var/lib/apt/lists/download.ebz.epson.net_dsc_op_stable_debian_dists_lsb3.2_main_i18n_Translation-en

show?

Re: Synaptic failure [solved?]

Rootling about - as one does - I came across Software Sources > Additional Repos > download.ebz.epson.net

A box was checked for the troublesome epson software, so I unchecked it.

All seems peace and light.

Hope I did the right thing, 'cos I can think of no reason for the software to be there in the first place.

Thank you all for your kind help.
