I have been trying to shift my office database (Customers, Stock, Orders & Invoices etc) to a Linux based system for ages but it is not an easy thing to do.

I tried Postgres & MySql but it is a huge amount of effort to rewrite the whole system using apps like these.

I have just tried OpenOffice Base, found two bugs (sent in the reports) and came crashing out of the app six times in 30 mins. The last time, all the tables in the database disappeared into the blue yonder.

Is there a lightweight reasonably simple database app that I haven't found yet ?.
For the moment it's back to CBuilder

I use MySQL but only because most of my database work is web-based, mainly PHP...

Which rdbms are you currently using? And what volumes of processing will it be doing?

I would swear by postgresql for nearly all situations, except perhaps where you need something really small for embedding into an app, in which case I'd use sqlite or hsqldb

I suppose, the database itself is not really the problem, I have tried several of them & they all obviously work ok.
It is all the supporting items around them that are a bit lacking.

I was hoping that someone would say, "Try app 'xyz'. It has the database, form designer & report writer all designed to work perfectly together and is exactly what you need" but I knew it was a bit unlikely because I have not seen anything like it in several years of using Linux.
Maybe when Open Office settles down a bit I'll try again.

Would mysql or postgres and gambas be of any use? There is a tutorial in LinuxFormat at the mo.
