It depends on what you want to do. If you install a SIP client, like Telepathy, then Google for SIP providers. There are tones of them , with varying rates. Which one is best for you depends on where you want to call.

Personally, I just stick with www.sipgate.co.uk

The biggest problem is simply that just about every other user only knows of, and therefore uses Skype.
You will therefore need some evangelism regarding VOIP applications before you can sensibly use an alternative to speak to anyone else.

Skype-to-Skype calls are free, so in asking for a lower cost alternative it would appear that Narenda want to use it to call POTS phones.

Since MIcrosoft have taken over Skype the costs of sending SMS and calling within the Uk have gone up.

So I am looking for its alternative. Even the Sipgate is expensive.

The best price alternative for UK calls and texts is probably a mobile phone. SIP is good for calling other SIP users or abroad, but for calls to UK numbers, especially mobiles, a bundled mobile deal is usually cheapest.

I was in a similar boat myself, looking for a Skype alternative, when I happened upon RHUB, which is what I prefer for my online collaboration. It's easy to use, and RHUB is very secure.

I use the Pidgin client, with all the plugins installed. to connect to the icq network. Pidgin does all the formats, even skype. at last count, msn, yahoo, skype, goggle and aol configured just now. I think. icq is the best overall though I find, for me. Loads of eye candy makes you appear in colours etc where others don't have the option! dyslexic acid off the internet is **** it is at! Just now, ThatIs. ie for instance / that is!

Are you certain it will connect to skype?
Last time I asked about this I was told that skype only talked to skype.
Have things changed now M$ has taken over at skype? It seems unlikely to me, but who knows?

The Pidgin client will definitely connect to the skype network. Whether or not somebody connected to the skype network can chat to somebody on google or msn etc I have no idea. I think skype to msn might be possible now but I don't know 1oo%

My understanding, is that the Pidgin Client will do everything that the official skype client can do regarding talking to other people.

hth, from Alex.

We do a great deal with the EADS Corporation.

They tore apart Skype a few years ago.

This might be worth a read:-
